5 GOALS I'M WORKING TOWARDS RIGHT NOW

Summer-goals-the-Kristen-diary-blog

A little over a month ago, I wrote this blog post sharing some of my summer goals and intentions. I was thinking over what my focus has been these past few weeks and how my current progress + goals compares to my starting goals. I always find myself constantly working on the same things while simultaneously adding in new ones. Do we think that's lack of followthrough or a strong commitment to the end goal?? LOL.

A lot of the personal improvement ones tend to be more along the lines of new habits or "constant goals" that don't necessarily have an end point. Things like drinking more water or reading more books, etc. I always feel like there's never an end to them... like the limit doesn't exist, ya know? The limit does not exist! I think it's just a constant step or positive habit that will ideally become apart of my daily routine. Maybe once it becomes automatic, I'll remove it from the list? Like brushing your teeth. I'll let you know when I get there!

1. DRINKING MORE WATER - I'm getting by with a little help from my YETI on this one. My bf gave me this cutie for Easter and it's been a game changer. I love the cap design + the color. As silly as it sounds, it makes me excited to bring it to work everyday which obviously encourages me to drink more water. I've found keeping it around where I'm at helps. When I see it, I'm reminded to get sippin. For whatever reason I've always struggled to drink more water on the daily so it's nice to have made a little bit of progress. Right now I'm aiming to drink at least one bottle per day + will hopefully work up to two or three.

2. TRACKING + IMPROVING SLEEP - Since getting my Oura ring last week, I've been monitoring my data like crazy. I loveeeee love love it so far. I bought it primarily for sleep and the heart rate variability feature which can provide insight on stress levels. Each day I get a sleep score rating my overall nights sleep, how long I spent in each sleep stage + areas of improvement. While you don't have to have a device to make positive changes in your sleeping, it definitely has it's advantageous. When I can see a direct cause + effect, it's much more encouraging for me to make adjustments.

3. READING MORE BOOKS - I've been really into summer reading lately so this one has been brought to the forefront. I think it's a combination between buying new books + fun beach reads. I love a good romance book and they usually can pull me out of a lull. In case you're curious or looking for some new books, I just finished It Happened One Summer by Tessa Bailey + now I'm on to The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid. Have you read either?

4. BOOSTING MY INCOME - In the previous post, I shared that I want to get more into investing and putting my money to work. This is still true, however I've also been trying to put in some extra hours and boost my income too. Every little bit always helps, especially with inflation right now. I feel like this is easier for me during the summer with longer days + nicer weather.

5. REINVENTING MY LOOK? - I didn't know exactly what to call this one, lol. I've been in a rut lately with my whole vibe + closet if that makes sense. I haven't been loving any of my clothes or style. The saying always goes "when you look good, you feel good" so I've been trying to do a little refresh on my hair, nails + wardrobe.

What goals do you have for this summer?

I love sharing my unboxings with you all! Should you click on or make a purchase through the links in this post, I'll earn some money to keep on shopping! Pretty cool, huh? :)

SELF-CARE SCHEDULE | 6.27.22

It feels like a good week for some extra self care. There’s been a lot of heaviness in the world lately and between that and whatever your own personal conflicts may be, it can be a lot. Sometimes I just feel like it's too much and I need to check out from everything for awhile. When that happens, I like to spend more time focusing on myself and the things that make me feel better. Here’s my to-do list for the week to take care of myself, rest + relax.

SELF-CARE SCHEDULEZ

+ Read: The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo
Last week I finished reading It Happened One Summer which re-lit a reading fire. It was so nice to focus my energy into a new book and I found myself feeling more optimistic. I think it’s important to have hobbies or places to go outside of our day to day responsibilities. Whether that’s through reading or something else, it can give you a greater purpose and enjoyment. I want to keep the habit going so my plan is to dive into The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo this week.

+ Shop for staples
I've officially reached the "I have nothing to wear" stage with my wardrobe. My style is always casual + easy but all of my go-to staples are on their last leg. It feels like a good week to splurge on some new tees + bike shorts. I've also had my eye on this pair of Birki's-- what do you think?

+ Watch: Gilmore Girls
I've been debating on starting a new show or re-watching Gilmore Girls. Whenever I need a little pick me up, it always feels good to watch something familiar and comforting. I haven't seen the show in years so it feels like an appropriate summertime watch. Needing something light + fun right now!

+ Improve Sleep
My Oura ring came in the mail last week so I've been testing it out for a few days now. It's been super interesting to get all of my sleep data and I'm working on boost my sleep + overall score. The areas I need the most improvement in right now are going to bed earlier and increasing REM sleep. Stay tuned for a little unboxing post coming later this week.

+ Order a milkshake
Sometimes ya just need one, ya know? Dreaming about Cookies & Cream from Chicky as we speak!

+ Clean car
I wrote a post awhile back talking about how much of a difference I feel when my car is clean. There's something about it that just makes me feel better mentally + that I have my life together. Adding it on my list to *hopefully* get done this week.

+ Sudoku
Every now and then I like a little mental challenge or puzzle. I got out of my daily wordle routine + have started back up on Sudoku. I like to do the expert level because I get tripped up and they take me longer to solve. Hoping one day I can breeze through them like the other levels!

That's what my weekly agenda is looking like in terms of self-care. I still make sure to walk 10K+ steps a day and I've been working on my water intake. I think it's nice to do the "good for your health" things + a few of the "good for your soul" things.

I love sharing my picks with you all! Should you click on or make a purchase through the links in this post, I'll earn some money to keep on shopping! Pretty cool, huh? :)

WEEKLY CRUMBL | 6.24.22

TGIF! My sista and I gave in and ordered this week's Crumbls. We've skipped the last several weeks so it was time. TBH I still have major FOMO from skipping last week... the Reese's and Twix ones are haunting me, guys. The ghost of cookies past. Definitely trying them the next time they come back. The excitement of this week is definitely the Honey Bun and Cosmic Brownie throwbacks. We were obsessed with the originals as kids so obviously we needed to get them. We also snagged the Blueberry Cheesecake + Cookie Butter Ice Cream, here's the rundown!

COOKIE LINE-UP

+ Honey Bun - I didn't think this one tasted that much like an actual honey bun but it was my favorite out of the group. It had a sweet, brown sugary flavor and the glaze on top was yummy. Overall it reminded me more of the brown sugar pop tarts (also my fave). If I were to order any of them again, it would be this one for sure.

+ Blueberry Cheesecake - Now on to my least favorite maybe? I think I had higher expectations on this one so it was a bit of a let down. I've always enjoyed their graham cracker cookie + cream cheese frosting combos but the blueberry topping didn't do it for me. It had too much of a wild blueberry flavor that I didn't care for with the sweeter icing. Everyone in my family tried them all and while I didn't love it, my dad said it was his favorite!

+ Galaxy Brownie - Very rich, very chocolatey. If you've had any of Crumbl's chocolate cookies, they all have a similar flavoring. Very cocoay and more on the bitter side. This one was okay. I was obsessed with Cosmic Brownies as a kid but I didn't get the same flavor or dense fudgey texture. Maybe because it was warm and more on the melty side. They also skimped a little on the candy topping which took away from the nostalgic look!

+ Cookie Butter Ice Cream - I liked this one. I haven't had one in years but I always loved the Biscoff cookies so I was excited to try it out. Definitely unique in concept but surprisingly more mild in flavor... not a super strong taste or impression for me. I did appreciate that it was chilled which gave it a little firmer texture. Nothing out of the ordinary for me but I enjoyed trying it out.

Overall I think it was just an off week for me and my tastes. I always appreciate trying different kinds- especially the ones that are not something I'd typically order. I think a lot of the times when we go in thinking we'll really like them all or certain ones they can turn out to be a letdown? I've definitely been surprised by a few of the ones that I really loved. It's always a fun adventure for sure. Have you tried any of them this week? Let me know what you thought if so. I'd love to hear what everyone likes since we do all have different tastes + preferences!

Happy Weekend!

ANOTHER SUMMER BOOK HAUL | JUNE

Back with more books! I ended up narrowing down my picks from the massive book sale last week because I'm a habitual buy-and-never-read-the-book-er. I feel like I've been making some progress this week though with It Happened One Summer by Tessa Bailey. I started it last week and only have maybe fiftyish pages left (spoiler-- it's SO good) so I expect I'll have it finished either tonight or tomorrow. Considering I've only read one other book this year, that's a total win! I have the reading itch right now so I had to share the ones I grabbed from the sale. PS-- if you want to see my first book haul of the Summer, I'll link it here.

THE GOODS

The 5 AM Club by Robin Sharma - One of my ultimate life goals is to *one day* be a morning person. Like a real get-up-and-conquer-the-world-before-eight morning person. Since I've been the exact opposite my entire life, I've always struggled with getting up earlier than necessary. I definitely value and appreciate having a little bit of time in the morning to not rush off to work, however I'd love to get up two or three hours earlier than I have to. I've heard The 5 AM Club is a great book for this. It not only outlines steps on waking up earlier, it also delves into the benefits and how it can transform your life. I honestly feel like that's one of the answers to having it all-- at least in my mind. For some reason it seems like a sanctimonious ritual. Not sure if that's true or just what we're sold but I hope to find out one day!

Malibu Rising by Taylor Jenkins Reid - Going in blind on this one. I haven't read the synopsis so I couldn't tell you in the slightest what this book is about (I will link it here for you though). I just know it's by Taylor Jenkins Reid whom I have yet to read anything by but that everyone seems to love. Because of that, I feel like I too love her as an author already. There's just a vibe about her books, ya know? I think I know I'm going to love them and her style. Malibu Rising also sounds like it would be good summer read too, no? Breaking the cardinal cover rule here so we'll have to see if we're right.

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid - I cannot waitttttttt to read The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo, also by TJR. I'm even more excited about this one than I am Malibu Rising. I've heard it's absolutely phenomenal. It stars the character of Evelyn Hugo, a glamorous Hollywood movie star once prominent in the '50s and onward. It shares the various tales of her life, including her various seven husbands throughout the years. I can already imagine her as the ultra fabulous, chic grandmother persona who has a lifetime of glamourous stories and juicy secrets.

What are you reading right now?

I love sharing my picks with you all! Should you click on or make a purchase through the links in this post, I'll earn some money to keep on shopping! Pretty cool, huh? :)

END OF THE WEEK THOUGHTS | 6.17.22

Ya'll, I’m beginning to wonder whether emotional roller coasters are a normal part of adulthood? Here we go again on a fun period of up, down, up, down. Also I'm realizing that 99% of these end of the week thoughts are basically the same? Lol, ya girl needs to vent sometimes. I try to keep things upbeat but I feel like I can’t be the only one who feels this way?? I always say writing helps and if you also ever feel or have felt this way, hopefully this makes you feel less alone.

I‘m starting to wonder if there’s a possible link to the feminine cycle or am I just going through a quarter life crisis?? LOL. Does anyone know? Please let a hoe know if so. On a serious note, I’ve been seeing a lot of information lately on the complexity of the female cycle so it has me curious. It's definitely on my list to explore and learn more about the different phases.

One thing I've found to really help is paying extra attention to the little things and having more gratitude in your life. It can make a world of difference when you're feeling down or frustrated. I think a lot of the times we (definitely me— guilty of this a lot) focus on what we don’t have or things we want which can create feelings of discouragement. By the time you add in the stress and uncertainty of the world, it's all too easy to walk yourself right down a staircase of despair. Definitely not where we want to be!

Focusing on the present and the good things in your life (even the really small, basic things) almost always boosts your mood. I’m constantly reminded of this so I'm choosing to do that after the week it has been. If you need some inspo, here are a few of my bright spots from the week:

+ OURA ring things. I finally bit the bullet last week and ordered an Oura ring. Now that I made the decision, I've been looking forward to start tracking my health and sleep habits. Before they ship you your ring, they send you a free sizing kit to find the right size which came in the mail this week. I've been testing out a few different sizes + can't wait to get the ring soon!

+ SALAD DRESSING. I know you're probably thinking WTF but hear me out. Salad dressing can make or break your salad, ya know? This is definitely relevant because my go-to salad place has been out of my go-to dressing for months now. I go almost every Friday-- it's my little end of the week treat. Guess what was FINALLY back today!! Honestly it really is the little things + a definite mood booster.

+ SUNSETS. We've had some stunning sunsets this week which always reminds me just how beautiful our world is. Seeing them on my drives home have been cathartic and grounding way to end the days.

Those are just a few of the small little joys of the week that I've been grateful and appreciative of.

What are some bright spots from your week?

TOP 5 MOST POPULAR BLOG POSTS | JUNE

Back in March I shared a post on the top five most popular blog posts from the month. It's always interesting for me to see which of my posts have the best reach and engagement from you guys. It helps give me ideas for future blog posts + areas to tweak or pivot. I thought sharing them with you might be useful or fun too. I talked a little on this in the March post, however I've found (at least in my case) that the newest posts usually aren't the most popular in the same month that they're posted. END OF THE WEEK THOUGHTS | 6.10.22

Jeni’s-ice-cream-salted-peanut-butter-chocolate-flecks

Has anyone else felt like it's been the longest week ever? It's always hard to get back into the groove after a shortened holiday week. I was not prepared for it at all. It didn't even dawn on me until I kept trying to figure out why I was feeling this way. Honestly Memorial Day really does seem years away at this point. Lol... ;) On a serious note, I'm very grateful the weekend is here which means time to sleep in + relax.

I've been challenging myself throughout the week to maintain a more positive attitude by being appreciative of all the good things- little and small. I too often find myself guilty of getting wrapped up in the nuances of the day to day and forgetting this. That probably means I haven't mastered this lesson yet but hopefully one day, right? By actively focusing on being positive and in a good mood, I'm once again reminded that when you take this approach, your days are usually smoother sailing and things tend to swing your way. I definitely believe that we receive what we put out in the universe, ie you get what you give. You can also have a greater impact on others too which is more significant than we often realize. Definitely recommend you give it a try. Something that helps me get in this head space is by listening to inspiring podcasts and focusing on all of the good things about my day. Whether during the day or while you're lying in bed, go through the day and pick out all of the good things.

A few of mine from today are that I woke up early and didn't have to rush before work, I had a delicious salad for lunch + I scored a pint of Jeni's Ice Cream half-off at Target tonight! Has anyone tried the Salted Peanut Butter before? I'm pretty sure it was a miss-ship to my store but a nice find for me. I know we all hear how it's "always the little things" but I couldn't agree more. Even better when food is involved!

Another little bright spot of my week was finally biting the bullet and ordering an Oura ring. I've gone back and forth on buying one for months now. I've noticed that as I've gotten older, I'm much more indecisive (or perhaps methodical?) when it comes to spending money. I suppose in some ways that's valuable and better than being impulsive, however I also exert way too much energy going back and forth. It's honestly exhausting and a little psychotic? I finally just said f*ck it and ordered the damn thing. I can't wait to start using it and I will definitely share more with you once it arrives!! PS-- have you seen the Oura x Gucci collab? I opted for the Gen3 but it's very cool!

Wishing you lots of R&R this weekend!

SUMMER READING | JUNE BOOK HAUL

Summer reading takes me back to the days of take home assignments and homework due at the start of the new school year. Anyone else have to do those book reports? I have loved to read for as long as I can remember so I think in some weird way I enjoyed them a little bit as a kid. Definitely more than the math homework & even more so if I got to choose my own books!

I don’t miss those study guide days now but reading in the summer brings a nostalgic feeling back. Despite not having three months off like when we were kids, it still occupies a slower pace of life and a greater emphasis on taking it easy. I also have more free time on my hands so I’m hoping to finally check off some of the books on my TBR list. Here’s what we’re starting off with:

+ It Happened One Summer by Tessa Bailey - The obligatory summer rom-com beach read of today's haul is It Happened One Summer by Tessa Bailey.  I needed to balance out the self-help books with something on the light and fun side. I loved Tessa's book Fix Her Up so this one seemed like a great choice to kick the summer off with. The book has been compared to the likes of Schitt's Creek with the typical plot of rich-girl-from-the-big-city visits small town, gets a culture shock and ends up falling in love with the sexy-hard-working-physical-labor-doing-man who despises everything she stands for. Hallmark movie vibes with a little heat. I always enjoy an enemies-to-lovers vibe so I'm very excited for this one!

+ The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle - The Power of Now is a personal growth + development book focusing on spiritual enlightenment by bringing yourself into the current moment of "Now." By being in the present, you have the ability to experience joy, inner peace and embrace your true self. I've heard amazing things about this book and focusing on the present is something that I think we can all do more of. It's so easy to dwell on the past or worry about the future-- I am guilty of both of these regularly. Looking forward to reading this + hoping for some positive transformations.

+ The Body Keeps the Score by Bessel Van Der Kolk - I've had The Body Keeps the Score on my TBR list for several months now. When I first saw a recommendation for it, I wasn't entirely sure what it was about but I knew it was health-focused and was said to be a great book for healing. I was initially under the impression that the idea of the book was based upon consumption + lifestyle factors. Recently I've been interested in learning more about stress, it's affect on us and ways to regulate our sympathetic nervous system (causes "fight or flight" response). With the books title, it made sense in my head? I should also add that I don't typically do a ton of research on books before actually reading or buying them. I'll usually go based off of a recommendation or a quick blurb + that's it. Research can be too telling at times and I prefer to fly in by the seat of my pants! I'd rather make my own conclusion than be skewed.

To get back to the point-- this appears to be completely different from what thought it was. I read more on the back of the book (and under the title-- totally missed that the first time?!) which very clearly states "Brain, Mind and Body in the Healing of Trauma." Trauma is a highly discussed topic today so I do think the book will be interesting and hopefully a valuable read. It's interesting because when you hear people discuss trauma today, it's often stated that we all have our own trauma in some way, shape or form. Depending on who you listen to, everything can either be a trauma response or is falsely labeled as such. Without an obvious event or circumstance, the gray areas can definitely be tricky so I can understand the polarity in that. I'm always interested to learn more, especially on topics relating to health. I'll keep you posted on this one once I start reading it.

What are you reading right now?

FATHER'S DAY GIFT IDEAS

Father's Day is only a few weeks away which means it's time to do a little shopping! I put together a guide with some Father's Day gift ideas that I think any guy would love. I took a lot of inspo from what my dad likes + what I would buy him for Father's Day, however as I general rule you usually can't go wrong with something sportsy or tech-related! I've found splurging on a nice shirt, a sentimental item or gadget usually goes over well too. My biggest tip is to choose something that aligns with their interests/hobbies or maybe an item they have on their wishlist. Hopefully these picks will give you some ideas + make the shopping process a breeze!
