NEW BOOKS | 2.28.24

Buying some new books earlier this month has *currently* gotten me back into my reading groove. Although I would do well to read some of the unread books I already own, there's just something about buying new books that always excites + inspires, ya know? Maybe it's the thrill of getting a new book you've been wanting to read or just a dopamine hit from spending that cash, lol. There should also be no surprised I'm still stuck between smutty romance and the self-help/personal growth/biz genres, lol (these days it's either one or the other). One day I'll peter back into some other areas but for now, that's where me + this haul are at.

Starting with the self help biz, two books that have been on my TBR list for years years now are The Psychology of Money and 12 Rules for Life. I've seen a lot of people recommend The Psychology of Money when it comes to investing and financial planning for the future. So far I'm thirty pages in and it already has a lot of interesting points. I've always been fascinated by how money affects and shapes all of us differently. As you get older and interact with others as an adult, you can definitely pick up on these differences and even more so, your own attitude and viewpoints towards money. Although it's been said we all form our money beliefs by age seven, I do feel like mine continue to evolve and shift. The book offers some interesting, logical explanations for this + is suppose to outline the topics of wealth, greed and happiness. I'm interested to see what else the book has to share as I read further.

I'm even more excited for the 12 Rules for Life by Jordan Peterson. He has such a unique way with his words and speeches, I'm looking forward to reading one of his books for the first time. When I listen to him, he has to say always resonates with me + pushes me to think more critically. I think he truly is a bit of an anomaly and a remarkable speaker.

Alright, on to fun reads! As recommended by TikTok, I grabbed King of Wrath and Credence. I briefly spoke about Credence in my February Reading List post... I'm still nervous to dive into this one, haha. I've already read King of Wrath which I enjoyed. It was a super quick read for me and I enjoyed the characters. Some elements of the plot seemed a little unrealistic in today's time but all in all, it was a fun read. I also wish the story continued on with Dante + Vivian in the sequel books versus being companion stories but I always feel that way, haha. I always feel like the spin-offs aren't as good, idk! We'll see though, maybe I'll read a few more of them someday.

I also picked up a little collectible edition of The Little Mermaid by Hans Christian Andersen. Years ago I started buying these beautifully designed classics from the design studio MinaLima. They're so neat with interactive, pop-up elements and beautiful artwork. I've never opened any of mine so for now, they're sealed collectibles + just a random, buy one here and there kind of thing!

You can read the synopsis + shop each book by clicking on the title below:

SALT & STONE DEODORANT REVIEW + RESTOCK HAUL

Last August I purchased Salt & Stone deodorants with an unboxing + mini first impression in this post. After six months of using them pretty much exclusively, I can officially say that they're the best "clean" deodorants I've found so far. In 2023, trying out and searching for clean deodorants that actually work was both a mission + heavy topic of conversation here on the blog. I've tried countless brands over the past year or two with cleaner, more natural formulas + no aluminum.

The main issues I always seem to run into with the majority of them is that they either don't work at all, they wear off, do no favors when it comes to aiding sweat or more often than not, break me out in an itchy rash. In regular deodorant, aluminum serves as an antiperspirant to prevent sweating. When you take that away, it's not a surprise that you'll have some sweating. Most of them even have other ingredients to help target some of the sweating, they just don't really work. Until trying out Salt & Stone, I was almost to the point of just switching back to good ole fashioned deodorant.

Between working in retail and exercising, I have a pretty active day to day. I'm constantly running around in an environment that puts my deodorant to the test when it comes to movement and activity. I think some of the cleaner options out there are fine if you aren't as active or prone to working up a sweat, however for me that's not realistic on most days. I love having cleaner, non-toxic products but I still need them to perform for my life. Especially when it comes to deodorant!

Trying out Salt & Stone has actually become a game changer for me- here's why:

+APPLICATION - The actual application + formula of the deodorant is a dream. The formula and consistency is more slick so it glides right on to the skin, dries down quickly + never leaves any kind of residue on my clothes. Because it's slick, there's also no chalkiness or residue left on your skin either.

+LESS SWEAT - Although these too are aluminum free and not antiperspirants, they do such a good job at keeping sweat under control. Pretty much every single other brand I've tried would leave me feeling super gross and icky once I started to sweat. I also feel like that mixed with your clothes makes the entire underarm situation a hot mess express. I can deal with being a little sweating at the gym, but not at work or during the regular part of my day. I'm not sure what it is about these that makes such a difference but I swear they are so much better.

+GOOD SMELLS - Let's talk scents. So far I've tested out the "Santal & Vetiver" and "Bergamot & Hinoki" scents in the deodorants + love both. They smell unique, a little sexy + sophisticated and most importantly, keep any unwanted scents away. I'm sure a large part of that is the formula itself but regardless, a win is a win here.

+PACKAGING - A little added bonus is the packaging + vibe. The containers are sleek + visually pleasing. I would definitely still use an "ugly" deodorant if it worked, however having nice containers is a little extra cherry on top.

All in all, I'm a huge fan + just did a reorder for all new full-sizes. I grabbed the same two sensitive skin formulas I've already tried + this extra strength formula in Neroli & Basil. I'm a little nervous to try out a non-sensitive formula but I've been curious to see if it will work even better than the sensitive. Seems like a good gym option!

Because I've had a lot of the itchiness and rashes, I try to stick with more sensitive formulas and no baking soda, etc. The sensitive formulas have also done pretty well for me here + I haven't had much issue. I think I noticed a little bit of itchy/bumps once or twice throughout my time using them but it wasn't until months later. In this case, it's been hard to pinpoint exactly where it's come from. I haven't been ale to tell if it's the deodorant, a shaving irritation or something else entirely. I do know though that once I ran out of the S&S, I switched to another brand I'd tried previously and I had an immediate rash/itching show up from that one. I think fragrance can be a common culprit but sometimes you don't have any issues with a product until months after using it either.

I'm definitely going to keep an eye on that to make sure but all in all, they've been amazing + work so well. I'd highly recommend if you've also struggled to find a good natural deodorant that works.

What's your go-to deodorant?

SOFT GIRL SELF CARE IDEAS

A few months back, I watched a content creator discuss the idea of being in a "soft winter." She stated that for most of evolution and nature, the winter months are a slow period where rest, recovery and ease are prioritized. As humans, we have deviated from this with our constant hustle culture and go go go mentality.  I'm sure we can all relate to the post-holiday season crash where you're left feeling exhausted, burnt out and less motivated for life than usual. This has always been my experience at the start of the new year and during the wintertime. After a busy and stressful holiday season followed by getting sick in January, I was feeling tired, a little down and just uninspired. Instead of wallowing or beating myself up about it, being sick and her video pushed me to just embrace the slowness. To take the time to really rest on all fronts: physically, mentally + emotionally.

In a similar regard, I've also been working on ways to lower my overall stress and cortisol levels. I haven't actually had my levels tested, however I often wonder how my body handles stress on a more cellular level. Stress itself is an unavoidable part of life that we're all faced with. While we can't necessarily combat it completely, finding ways to manage and cope properly is crucial. There are also so many studies on the negative impact and consequences caused by unmanaged stress. I've been trying to be proactive now by prioritizing myself + more ways to relax. If you're also looking to lower stress or just embrace your soft girl era, here are some of my current favorite ways to prioritize yourself + embrace a more relaxed, slower pace.

MORE SELF + LESS STRESS:

+SCROLL LESS - I would be willing to bet there is a spike in overall screen time during the winter months. We're all inside more and it's an easy way to pass the time. While I'm all for the internet + social media (ya girl loves to scroll herself!), I definitely find too much impacts me negatively. I catch myself spending way too much time just aimlessly watching TikTok and depending on what I'm seeing, I often feel more anxious and stressed. Lately I've focused on trying to spend some of my sculling time doing other things, as well as be more mindful of what I'm watching. I now try to only consume things that make me feel uplifted or inspired. If something starts to shift my mood negatively, I swipe up + keep it moving.

+READ A BOOK - In place of less scrolling is more reading. I've recently picked it back up and it's made my life so much more enjoyable. There's just nothing like diving into a new world inside of books. Reading can also significantly lower your stress levels + will always be underrated IMO.

+GET YOUR NAILS DONE - I recently went to get my nails done for the first time in YEARS. I always go back in forth between whether I should go or not but honestly, it makes a world of difference for me. Having them done is an instant confidence boost that makes me feel so much more put together. It's also a nice little luxury to treat yourself with and for me, is a lot less stress than trying to do my own!

+LOW IMPACT ACTIVITY - Despite all of the typical New Year's resolutions to get in shape and workout, I have NOT been feeling it. Totally keeping it real- the only thing that has pushed me to still workout is my monthly OTF membership, lol. I refuse to miss a paid class but I've been dragging my feet. While I'm all about discipline and staying consistent, it's okay to switch things up and give yourself a little grace. For me, that also means embracing lower impact activities to keep moving but give my body a little bit of rest from HIIT or intense cardio. I like to walk a lot but have also looked into starting yoga or pilates!

+SLEEP MORE - One of my biggest challenges when it comes to health is always sleep. Habitually, I tend to stay up too late which sacrifices my sleep hours + quality. While I still haven't figured this one out completely, I've been a tiny bit better these last few months. I've been pushing myself to go to bed when I actually feel tired (who would have ever thought of such a thing?? lol) + also allowing myself to sleep in a little bit more when I feel I need to. Like with stress, your sleep has a huge impact on overall health + is one of the most important aspects of self care.

What self care habits do you use to lower stress?

END OF THE WEEK THOUGHTS + A LITTLE WEEKEND GETAWAY | 2.16.24

End-of-the-week-thoughts-The-Kristen-Diary-blog

Cheers to Friday, friends. I hope you’ve had a relaxing, fun filled Valentine’s week. This week focusing on new ways to relax and lower my stress levels has been on mind. I’ve always heard high cortisol can levels lead to an array of health issues over time which is definitely not what we want. It’s something that I try to be mindful of but in today’s world, can be challenging.

A few things I’ve been focusing on lately to lower my overall stress and be more relaxed is prioritizing sleep, reading again and lowering my social media use. It’s been exciting to dive back into books and read during lunch breaks and before bed. This week I finished The Christmas Fix by Lucy Score which I had paused during the holidays. I also started King of Wrath by Ana Huang which is keeping my attention so far. Lighthearted romancey books always pull me out of a reading rut and has also been reducing my late night scrolling.

The bf and I also took a little mini road-trip and this weekend to get away which has been so nice. We’ve spent the last 24 hours relaxing, eating yummy food + spending time together. We also went to the zoo which was so fun! Here’s your reminder to do a little getaway when you can- it’s so nice. Whether you go on a solo trip, with a significant other or friends, we all need a little time to recharge and deviate from the status quo.

It’s back to normal for us tomorrow but I’m wishing you the best weekend!

What are your plans this weekend?

TOP 5 MOST POPULAR BLOG POSTS | 2.14.24

Happy Valentine's Day, lovies. I hope your day has been filled with all the good things. Regardless of whether you're sInGle like a Pringle or TaKeN, you're always a 10/10 boo. VDAY did kinda sneak up on us, though, huh? What is it about January feeling like it creeeeeeeeeped on by but now it's basically spring??? I'm telling ya'll, I'll never get over time. It's too wild. Because we're now halfway through February, you know it's time for the top five most popular blog posts of the month. Here's the lineup!

1. OURA RING UNBOXING - Alright, this week Oura launched a new metric on tracking your stress levels + recovery throughout the day. I'm very excited by this, however so far my average stress level has been about three hours per day, lol. I'm not sure how accurate the data is right now but I'm interested to see where it goes + new ways to add in restorative time. One of my more recent goals has been to make more time for relaxing + lowering my cortisol. Having access to this type of information is one of the reasons why I love my Oura ring + highly recommend them. For more info, check out my unboxing post with all the details here

2. SHE READS TRUTH BIBLE | UNBOXING - A non-negotiable in my daily routine is to always read a passage or a few verses from my Bible everyday. I've shared my She Reads Truth Bible on here before which I love-- you can find the unboxing here. Because it's a CSV Bible, it's a little bit easier to read and interpret than some others which to me has been a game changer. PS-- right now you can buy the same one I have here for almost 50% off which is a great buy!

5 OF THE BEST ROM-COMS ON NETFLIX RIGHT NOW

There's no better way to spend the month of February than by watching some classic rom-coms. It screams Valentine's season and makes for the perfect date night, solo sesh or Galentine's with the girls. I'm not sure I've met many rom-coms that I haven't liked, however I'm definitely a sucker for some of the oldies + ones I grew up watching. Although the options are endless, here are my top-five picks from what's currently on Netflix.

5 OF THE BEST ROM-COMS ON NETFLIX RIGHT NOW

1. It's Complicated + Something's Gotta Give - Alright, I'm technically cheating here by including these two together, however Nancy Meyer is the queen of the rom-com. Her movies always hit the spot and it just so happens that both It's Complicated and Something's Gotta Give are both on Netflix. Both are gems but have a lot of similarities, how can you really pick between the two?? I will say I'm just slightly more partial to It's Complicated, but you will laugh your booty off either way. I also find both men + women enjoy these!

2. Sixteen Candles - I will forever die on the hill that I should've been an '80s baby. There are so many good (and better) things that came out of the '80s, including the Brat Pack and John Hughes films. If you've never seen Sixteen Candles, take full advantage + watch it ASAP. Starring the iconic Molly Ringwald, Andie faces an eventful 16th birthday full of quirks, embarrassment and a crush on the hot, popular (and older) Jake Ryan.

3. 13 Going On 30 - A classic from my childhood that I still love today is 13 Going On 30. The older I get, the more appreciation I gain for Jennifer Garner. She's an icon both in film + in real life, especially in this gem of a movie. If for some (super crazy and wild!) reason you haven't seen this one, 13 year old Jenna is tired of adolescent drama and after a birthday wish, wakes up as her 30 year old self. She's transformed to her new life as an adult but quickly finds it too is full of it's own drama and challenges.

4. She's All That - We've entered the '90s here with She's All That, ya'll. This one is a cute high school rom-com where the nerdy gal + popular guy pair up in an unusual encounter. Full of some angst and drama, it's a '90s classic and a good throwback.

5. Mamma Mia! - I love the light-hearted fun of Mamma Mia! and while I'm normally not a big musical fan, my old soul happens to also love the '70s + a gem of a band known as ABBA whose songs are sang throughout the entire movie. This one follows soon to be married Sophie who has grown up in Greece with her single mother and no knowledge of her biological father. In anticipation of her big day, she invites three of her mother's old flames to Greece in hopes of discovering which is her father. Despite the dramatic plot, it's very light, fun + a cute watch!

What's your favorite rom-com?

BEAUTY HAUL + 2024 ULTA/SEPHORA BIRTHDAY GIFTS

In celebration of my birthday, I treated myself to a few new makeup goodies + snagged this year's birthday gifts from Sephora + Ulta. My sissy also gifted me a few things from my wish list so let's do a little birthday haul :)

To me from me are a new BeautyBlender, the Prima Unwind Bath Gem + one of the new Summer Fridays Lip Oils. I keep seeing rave reviews about them so I'm very excited to try! I love their Butter Lip Balm and that everything is formulated with clean, non-toxic ingredients. I picked the shade "Pink Cloud." The Prima Bath Gem was a bit of an impulse buy but ya'll know how much I love to soak! The brand offers several different bath soaks, I chose the Unwind soak which has epsom salt and CBD to calm and relax.

From my sister: The Hand Cream by Nécessaire and the Natasha Denona My Mini Dream Glow Blush. I've had my eye on both of these and can't wait to use them-- thanks sissy! I loved the original Nécessaire hand cream so I can't wait to try out the new version-- my hands also need it, they've been so dry this winter.

For my birthday freebies, I chose the Kopari Ultra Restore Body Butter from Ulta and the Charlotte Tilbury Birthday Trio at Sephora. This set comes with a mini lipstick, Airbrush Flawless Spray + Magic Cream sample. Every year I have a hard time choosing which one to pick from Sephora because all of the choices are good. Ulta did this year too! Normally it's a different one each month so what you get usually depends on when your birthday is. This year they had 4-5 different options you could actually choose from and I liked the Kopari!

WHAT TO BUY YOUR GUY FOR VALENTINE'S DAY

If Valentine's Day had a team mantra, it would definitely be the viral "remind me of your gender again- these are for GIRLS ONLY" trend on TikTok. We all know Valentine's Day is all about the girlies, however I think it's nice to buy your guy a little something too. Let's hear it for the booooyssss- they deserve some appreciation on Valentine's too. If you wanna do a little something but aren't sure what to get, here are a few of my favorite gift ideas.

You definitely don't have to go crazy either-- something as simple as a nice card + their favorite candy is great. All of the men I know love food + snacks so whether you opt for snackies, something homemade or a gift card to their favorite place to eat, that's always a fail-safe.

When it comes to non-food items, men can sometimes be hard to buy for. I always say this but in my experience, they usually buy most of what they want or need for themselves. They also just want less "stuff" than we do (or ME anyway, hehe). Some gifts that my boyfriend always seems to enjoy are books off of his wishlist, clothes (good if you know size + what he likes), snackies, water bottles or a "need" item that he doesn't want to pick out himself (usually something home related, lol). AKA- if they tell you they need a new shower curtain but don't buy one, that's probably a cue for you to pick one out for them!

Nice accessories also make great gifts if you have an idea of their style + are very fitting for Valentine's Day. Something like a nice wallet, bottle of cologne or a button-down shirt have a sexy date vibe to them that is very on brand. Loungewear, boxers + slippers also just feel Valentine's Day-ish to me too. You can go as affordable or splurgy as you want with these items but regardless of the budget, I think most men would appreciate them + that you picked them out for them. Once again- if all else fails, just go for snackies!

FEBRUARY READING LIST

Since there's a huge buy one book, get one 50% off sale going on right now, I spent a good part of my morning scrolling through new recommendations on TikTok. I'm still stuck within either romance or self-help/businessy genres right now. It's giving personal growth or escaping reality, lol. Right now I'm still narrowing down + deciding what to buy, however these four are definitely in my top picks for February.

In the personal growth/self improvement realm, I've had The Psychology of Money and 12 Rules For Life on my reading list for what feels like years now. I've never purchased them before but with the start of the new year, it seems like a good time to dive in to a little financial literature + some Peterson wisdom.

I've also been on the hunt for some good romance, something that really pulls you in. After reading through tons of comments, two that stuck out were Things We Never Got Over and Credence. Whenever I research books, I tend to look at the overall ratings + reviews, however I try not to read too much about the actual plot. Based on what the comments were saying, I added both of these to my cart immediately without a second thought. I've seen the cover art of Things We Never Got Over before, however I have zero clue on what it's about, the vibe, etc. The top comment that sold me on it was "I'll sell my soul to read it for the first time again." When it comes to reading and books, that might be one of THE best compliments you could give. Even to this day, there are still certain books that I would give anything for to go back and re-experience again for the first time. I live + love that feeling!

Alright, what to say about Credence... ya'll, I'm not sure what to think. The only thing the Tokkers gave on this one was that it was a dark romance. All comments were in favor (I mean rave upon RAVE reviews, ya'll) except for Ms. Shannon who "just couldn't." I didn't really know what to make of all that but if it's hot, we throw it in the bag. Now this is where things may or may not be getting a little dicey... as I was searching the book titles to make this post, I ended up seeing the little blurb for the book. After reading, I'm not really sure what to think now-- is it giving horror film vibes? Do I still buy it???? Lol, jokes aside but the motion sensor alarm on my creep meter might've gone off once or twice. I obviously can't peg which way things are going to go here and I don't really know what to expect with dark romance so my imagination is runnnnnninnnnggg. Obviously I HAVE to know now but I'm a lil' nervous. Ya'll said it was good though so we'll see...

WEEKLY GROCERY HAUL | 2.2.24

We're diving into the first weekend of Feb with another mini, healthyish grocery haul. Ya'll know I'm a sucker for the Publix BOGOs so here are a few pickups + staples from the week. One of my newest obsessions is the Hero Seeded Bread-- total game changer and definitely a new favorite! First of all, it's super yummy. Second, it's super clean, healthy + nutritious. Each slice only has 60 calories, 0g of sugar and 6g of protein. I've been working on ways to up my protein intake without adding in too many calories so this is great. It has (very deservingly) earned the top spot for the most expensive loaf of bread I've purchased but is 100% worth it- 10/10.

Always on the essentials list- diced ham, greek yogurt + eggs. I'm excited to try out Happy Eggs this week, I never have! I usually stick to Vital Farms but these were on sale so we'll give them a go. I also love the Kodiak S'mores Bars so I grab them whenever they are on sale- I like that they have more protein than the average granola bar for a quick snackie.

My wildcards this week are the Eggland's Omelet Bites (have been wanting to try!), new Purely Elizabeth Cookie Granola (umm hello? YUM) and the Babybel Cheeses in Gouda. MY FAVORITE'S GOUDA, YA'LL. IYKYK, yk? Honestly though, Gouda is a goodie. I also had no clue they made these in so many flavors??? When I was in elementary/middle school, I begged my mom to buy these in the original flavor for my lunches because who doesn't want a mini cheese wheel??? The little wax wrapping also sealed the deal in my ten-year old mind (pun intended, obvs)... hehe. Once she finally caved, tragedy struck during that school lunch hour because I ended up HATING how they tasted. I'm pretty sure I only ever ate one and that was that. LOL.

Now as a *slightly* less picky adult, I'm pretty confident I'd enjoy the original flavor now too (at least more now than then), but the GOUDA is sure to be a done deal. I don't know if I've ever met a Gouda I didn't like but crazier things have happened. We'll have to see, won't we? Also can't lie-- very excited to relive my childhood excitement of peeling that wax off!

DAIRY/NON-DAIRY
+
Oikos Triple Zero Greek Yogurt | Vanilla Bean
+ Babybel Gouda Cheese

PROTEIN
+ Greenfield Diced Ham
+ Happy Egg Co. Free Range Eggs
+ Eggland's Best Bacon & Three Cheese Omelet Bites

GRAINS/BREAD
